Arizona Secretary of State Ken Bennett wants the Arizona Citizens Clean Elections Commission to sign off on his request to appear in voter education ads.
Bennett says in a letter to the commission that he wants to be sure he isn't breaking any rules because he's also running for governor as a publicly funded candidate. The commission will consider the request at its meeting Thursday.
Bennett says his office plans ads to urge voters to return mail-in ballots as soon as possible and to vote using that ballot. He wants to avoid a repeat of a major vote-counting delay like what happened in the 2012 general election.
The Arizona Advocacy Network is urging the commission to reject the ads because they will clearly benefit Bennett's campaign.
