Letters Sent to State and Local Election Officials Urge Adoption of Election Administration Plan and Other Actions to Address Long Lines and Disenfranchisement During Primary Election
WASHINGTON, D.C. – In response to long lines, disenfranchisement and other barriers faced by voters during the presidential preference election last week in Arizona, the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law (Lawyers’ Committee) and local partners have issued letters outlining immediate corrective actions that must be taken by Arizona election officials in advance of any future election in the state. Arizona is a state that was formerly covered by the Section 5 preclearance provision of the Voting Rights Act, a law that helped to block and deter discriminatory and burdensome voting changes. This year marks the first presidential election cycle in more than 50 years conducted without the full protections of the landmark Voting Rights Act.Read more
“When voters don't have reasonable access to voting, they are being denied the right to vote.” – Samantha Pstross, Executive Director of the Arizona Advocacy Network
Yesterday’s special Elections Committee focused on last week’s election fiasco, but it was abruptly adjourned to go to the House Floor. Rep. Ken Clark invited everyone to watch the floor vote on a bill that will have painful lasting effects on our election system for decades to come, SB1516 – Campaign Finance Overhaul. He wrote an excellent piece on this drastic bill. When lawmakers saw the crowd, they decided to pull SB1516 off the agenda. However, it will most likely go back for a final vote sometime this week.
UPDATE: Yesterday, an in-depth poll revealed that 70% of Arizona voters oppose SB1516 and 84% said they would be less likely to vote for someone who supported SB1516.
On Monday, the House of Representatives will be voting on SB1516. This is our last chance to tell our lawmakers to RESPECT VOTERS AND OPPOSE SB1516. Please contact your representative and other representatives TODAY.
