Endorse Clean Elections

Today, our primary focus is defending and strengthening the voter approved 1998 Citizen’s Clean Elections Act.  AZAN Foundation is the lead plaintiff challenging an unconstitutional measure which the legislature has referred to the 2012 ballot.  We’re on the offensive too.  We have a bi-partisan effort to add a small donor program to replace “triggered matching funds.”  It provides a funding mechanism so viable candidates can compete and still offers a shield against the corrupting influence of lobbyist and Big Money. The U.S. Supreme Court unanimously affirmed the constitutionality of Clean Elections and recognized it as a tool to fight political corruption.

Voting Rights are another essential component of our on-going work. AZAN Foundation remains a lead plaintiff in challenging an Arizona voter registration law designed to suppress the voting rights of eligible citizens.  We have won every court hearing and now await a decision by the full 9th Circuit Court of Appeals from our June 2011 appearance.

Finally, we are monitoring the redistricting of Arizona to ensure the Voting Rights Act is met and the Independent Redistricting Commission creates more districts that are competitive in legislative and congressional elections. We hope to see 10-12 competitive legislative districts and four or more competitive congressional districts formed while meeting the Voting Rights Act.
